Oscar Pistorius career

Oscar Pistorius was born on November 22, 1986, to Henke and Sheila Pistorius in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa. He is a convicted murderer and former professional sprinter from South Africa.

He was raised in a Christian family with an older brother, Carl, and a younger sister, Aimée. Due to a congenital abnormality, both of his feet were amputated when he was 11 months old; he was born without the outside of both feet and both fibulae.

Pistorius competed in both non-disabled sprint events and below-knee amputee sprint events. He was the tenth athlete to compete in the Paralympics and the Olympic games.

Pistorius credits his mother, who died at the age of 43 when he was 15 years old, to be a massive influence in his life. Pistorius hails from an Afrikaner family of partly Italian descent through his maternal great-grandfather, an Italian emigrant to Kenya. His native language is Afrikaans, and he is also fluent in English.

He attended Constantia Kloof Primary School and Pretoria Boys High School, where he was a member of the school’s third XV rugby union squad. Between the ages of 11 and 13, he competed in water polo and tennis at the provincial level. Pistorius also competed in club Olympic wrestling.

Pistorius attempted to compete in nondisabled international championships after becoming a Paralympic champion. Still, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) objected, arguing that his artificial limbs gave an unfair advantage.

Pistorius became the first amputee to win a non-disabled world track medal at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. Pistorius was the first double-leg amputee to compete in the Summer Olympics in 2012.

Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, paralegal and model Reeva Steenkamp, at his Pretoria home on February 14, 2013. He claimed he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder who was hiding in the bathroom.

He was taken into custody and charged with murder. Pistorius was found not guilty of murder but guilty of culpable homicide at his trial the following year. He was sentenced to five years in jail for culpable homicide and a concurrent three-year suspended sentence for reckless endangerment.

Pistorius was temporarily released on house arrest in 2015 while his case was heard by a panel at South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal, which reversed the culpable homicide decision and convicted him of murder.

Pistorius’ sentence was increased to six years in July 2016 by Judge Thokozile Masipa. The Supreme Court of Appeal raised the prison term to a total of 15 years after the state appealed for a lengthier prison sentence. In 2023, Pistorius was denied parole.
