He grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois, just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri, and was raised Catholic. Throughout his childhood, his mother and grandmother coached and trained him. He competed in his first U.S. Championship, the boys’ 11-and-under in 1961, when he was 9 years old.
Connors owns three Open Era men’s singles records: 109 titles, 1,557 matches, and 1,274 wins. He has won eight major singles titles (five US Opens, two Wimbledons, and one Australian Open), as well as three year-end championships. In 1974, he became the second man in the Open Era to win three major titles in a calendar year, but was unable to compete in the fourth, the French Open.
From 1974 to 1978, Connors ranked first in the ATP rankings at the end of each year. In 1982, he won Wimbledon and the US Open and was named ATP Player of the Year and ITF World Champion. Jimmy Connors retired in 1996, at the age of 43.
