Rosemeri dos Reis Cholbi is Pelé first wife. Pelé and Rosemeri dos Reis Cholbi married in 1966 while residing in Brazil. De Brito took Pelé to Santos, an industrial and port city near So Paulo, to try out for the professional club Santos FC in 1956, telling the Santos directors that the 15-year-old would be “the greatest football player in the world.” During his trial at the Estádio Vila Belmiro, Pelé impressed Santos coach Lula and signed a professional contract with the club in June 1956. Pelé was heavily hyped as a potential superstar in the local media. He made his senior team debut against Corinthians de Santo André on September 7, 1956, at the age of 15, and had a spectacular performance in a 7-1 victory, scoring the first goal of his prolific career during the encounter.

Pelé had a turbulent relationship before marrying. In 1964, he had a romance with a maid named Anizia Machado. When Anizia accused him of fathering Sandra Regina Machado, her child, he denied the affair for decades. Sandra fought a long legal battle to be acknowledged as his daughter as she got older. She sued him in 1991, and DNA tests confirmed that she was his daughter, which he refused to accept until 1998. She was never compensated for growing up without the privileges his other six children enjoyed. Sandra died in October 2006 without being paid.
