Edson Arantes do Nascimento, best known as Pelé, the son of Fluminense footballer Dondinho and Celeste Arantes, was born on October 23, 1940, in Três Coraçes, Minas Gerais, Brazil. He was the eldest of two brothers and sisters. He was named after Thomas Edison, an American inventor. His parents chose to delete the ‘i’ and call him “Edson,” but there was an error on the birth certificate, so many records show him as “Edison,” rather than “Edson,” as he is.
His relatives first referred to him as “Dico.” During his school days, he was given the nickname “Pelé” supposedly due to his mispronunciation of the name of his favorite player, local Vasco da Gama goalie Bilé, which he misspoke but the more he complained, the more it stuck. Pelé confessed in his memoirs that he and his old friends had no idea what the moniker signified. Aside from the allegation that the name is derived from Bilé and that it is Hebrew for “wonder,” there is no acknowledged Portuguese meaning for the phrase. He grew up in the impoverished hamlet of Bauru, So Paulo state.
