Summary of Pelé’s career

Pelé was born on October 23, 1940, in Três Coraçes, Minas Gerais, Brazil, as Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the son of Fluminense footballer Dondinho and Celeste Arantes. He was the older of two brothers and sisters. He was named after Thomas Edison, an American inventor. His parents opted to drop the ‘i’ and call him “Edson,” but there was an error on the birth certificate, so many records reflect his name as “Edison,” rather than “Edson,” as he is.

His family first dubbed him “Dico.” He was given the moniker “Pelé” during his school days, allegedly because he mispronounced the name of his favorite player, local Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Bilé, which he misspoke but the more he complained, the more it stayed. Pelé revealed in his memoirs that neither he nor his old pals knew what the name meant. Apart from the claim that the name is derived from Bilé and that it is Hebrew for “wonder” the term has no recognized Portuguese meaning.

Pelé was raised in the impoverished town of Bauru, in the state of So Paulo. He supplemented his income by working as a servant at tea shops. Because he couldn’t afford a proper football and was taught to play by his father, he normally played with a sock stuffed with newspaper and tied with a thread or a grapefruit. In his youth, he was a member of various amateur teams, including Sete de Setembro, Canto do Rio, So Paulinho, and Amériquinha. Pelé led the Bauru Athletic Club juniors (coached by Waldemar de Brito) to two state youth titles in So Paulo.

He was a member of the Radium indoor football squad while he was in his mid-teens. Pelé began playing indoor football just as it was becoming popular in Bauru. He took part in the region’s first futsal (indoor football) competition. Pelé and his team won the inaugural title.
