Pelé has been at the center of numerous controversies throughout his career. In 1964, the player had an affair with housemaid Anizia Machado. He denied that the relationship existed. As a result of the affair, Sandra Regina Machado was born. The Brazilian athlete, though, denied having a child with the housemaid.
Sandra battled in court to develop a relationship with the former athlete. In 1993, the court finally ordered a DNA test. The test indicated that her father was a three-time World Cup winner.
Pelé appealed the decision, but a test in 1996 established their relationship once again. Sandra died in 2006, after succumbing to breast cancer. Despite the fact that he did not attend her burial, Edson sent her a wreath.
