Franz Anton Beckenbauer was born in Munich, Germany on September 11, 1945. He is a former professional football player and manager from Germany. “der Kaiser” was his moniker. Beckenbauer dominated German football in the 1960s and 1970s and is often regarded as the country’s finest player. Beckenbauer, a talented player who began his career as a midfielder, rose to prominence as a center defense.
He is widely credited with inventing the contemporary sweeper (libero). He is one of nine players who have won the FIFA World Cup, the European Champions Cup, and the Ballon d’Or while playing for club and country.
Beckenbauer was voted European Footballer of the Year twice and played in three FIFA World Cups and two European Championships for West Germany. He earned the World Cup medal as captain in 1974 and again as manager in 1990.
