Robert Arthur Allison popularly known as Bobby Allison is a retired American professional stock car racing driver and owner. He was born in Miami, Florida on December 3, 1937.
Allison founded the Alabama Gang, a gang of drivers stationed in Hueytown, Alabama, where there were plenty of short tracks with big payouts. Allison raced in the NASCAR Cup Series from 1961 to 1988, as well as competing in short-track events regularly.
He also competed in IndyCar, Trans-Am, and Can-Am races. He was named one of NASCAR’s 50 best drivers and a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. He won the Winston Cup in 1983 and the Daytona 500 in 1978, 1982, and 1988. His brother Donnie Allison, as well as his two kids Clifford and Davey Allison, were all notable drivers.
Allison wrecked during lap 1 of the Miller High Life 500 on June 19, 1988, in the middle of the 1988 season. Initially, he survived a head-on collision with the outside barrier, but then Jocko Maggiacomo t-boned Allison on the driver’s side of the car, nearly killing Allison.

When he arrived at a local hospital, he was initially declared dead, but subsequent medical assistance saved his life. Allison entered a rehab program, and after regaining most of his memory and re-learning everyday activities, Allison prepared to attempt a comeback in the early 1990s. However, a series of tragedies caused Allison to abandon his comeback attempt, thus retiring from NASCAR driving.

Bobby Allison and Judy Allison are parents of four children. Bobby Allison and Judy Allison first married in 1960 and three years after the major tragedies, Bobby Allison and his wife Judy divorced in 1996.
They reconnected four years after their divorce while attending their daughter-in-law’s wedding. They wedded in July 2000 and stayed married until Judy died in 2015. The couple was blessed with four children from their marriage: Clifford Allison, Davey Allison, Bonnie Farr, and Carrie Hewitt.

Clifford Allison
Clifford Allison was born in Hueytown, Alabama, on October 20, 1964, and died on August 13, 1992. Clifford Allison is the youngest of Bobby and Judy Allison’s four children. Clifford was a stock car racing driver from the United States. He grew up in Hueytown, Alabama, and was a part of the “Alabama Gang” in stock car racing.
He passed away in a crash at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan. In 1992, he lost control of his car, smashed into a wall, and was killed instantaneously.
Allison died while in transit to the hospital during practice for the Detroit Gasket 200, a Busch Series race at Michigan International Speedway in August 1992. Allison spun in turn four and hit the concrete wall with the driver’s side. He was the first of two Allisons to die in eleven months. His brother died the next year in a helicopter disaster at Talladega Superspeedway.
Davey Allison
Davey Allison, also known as David Carl Allison, was a NASCAR driver from the United States. He was most known for driving the No. 28 Texaco-Havoline Ford for Robert Yates Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series. Davey Allison was born in Hollywood, Florida on February 25, 1961, and died on July 13, 1993. He was the oldest of Bobby and Judy Allison’s four children.
Davey Allison married Deborah Allison in 1984 and divorced her in 1988. He later married Liz Allison, with whom he was married until he died in 1993. Davey had two children from his relationship: Robert Grey Allison, and Krista Marie Allison.
Allison participated in sports as a child, choosing football but eventually settling on auto racing. After graduating from high school, he began working for his father’s NASCAR Winston Cup Series business and built his race car, a Chevy Nova, with friends known as the “Peach Fuzz Gang.”
He began his career at Birmingham International Raceway in 1979, winning his first race in his sixth appearance. He won frequently at BIR and, by 1983, was racing in the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) series.
Allison boarded his newly bought Hughes 369HS helicopter on July 12, 1993, and flew to Talladega Superspeedway to watch family friend Neil Bonnett race. On the way to the track, he picked up another family buddy, racer Red Farmer. Allison was attempting to land the helicopter inside a fenced-in portion of the track infield when the craft nosed up and crashed.
Farmer was rescued from the wreckage by Neil Bonnett, but Allison was unresponsive and could not be removed until paramedics came. Farmer made a full recovery, while Allison died after suffering a catastrophic brain injury. Davey was laid to rest in Highland Memorial Gardens in Birmingham, Alabama.
