Biography

Nick Pope was born in Soham, Cambridgeshire, and he attended King’s School in nearby Ely. At the age of 10, he started his career in the club’s youth program and stayed with Ipswich Town. At the age of 16, he was expelled from the academy because they did not have enough faith in him. He was released by Ipswich Town, and in 2008 he signed with Bury Town, a non-league team.
Pope proved he was capable at that level when, after challenging and briefly taking Marcus Garnham’s place, he wore the number-one shirt for Bury Town during a number of first-team games after making his debut for the team at the age of just 16.
“I honestly think Nick Pope can go all the way to the top,” manager Richard Wilkins said of Pope, who he called “the most naturally brilliant player to progress through the ranks at the West Suffolk Sports Academy and Bury Town.”
He never made it to Bury Town’s first squad and, on May 24, 2011, he signed a long-term deal with Charlton Athletic of League One.
