His father, a former ring announcer for Chaotic Wrestling, is of Italian lineage, while his mother is English and French-Canadian. His maternal grandfather was a baseball player named Tony Lupien, and Ulysses J. Lupien, a businessman, was his maternal great-grandfather. Of his five brothers—Dan, Matt, Steve, and Sean—he is the second oldest. Growing up, he and his brothers would make cardboard championship belts as he and his brothers were wrestling fans. He is related to the computer scientist Natalie Enright Jerger and was raised as a Roman Catholic. When he was 12 years old, Cena asked for a weightlifting bench after being subjected to physical and verbal abuse.
Cena first attended Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, before transferring to Cushing Academy, a selective private boarding school in Ashburnham, Massachusetts.
