He began his career in 1998, fighting for various small promotions. In 2002, he signed with Total Nonstop Action (TNA), a wrestling promotion that paid him $350-$390K. He grew and finally won numerous titles in TNA, including the TNA heavyweight belt. He worked in different Japanese and Mexican promotions as a result of a TNA affiliation. In 2013, his TNA contract expired. He participated in Ring of Honor (ROH) from 2002 to 2006, becoming the inaugural ROH Pure Champion. He joined the WWE in 2016 as a Smackdown Live talent. He became WWE Champion in his first year.
