Former English footballer Sir Robert Charlton primarily played as a forward or a midfielder. He is recognized as one of the all-time great players and was a member of the England team that won the FIFA World Cup in 1966, the same year he won the Ballon d’Or. In 1967 and 1968, he placed second position in the Ballon d’Or.
He played practically his entire professional career at Manchester United, where he became known for his attacking instincts, midfield passing talents, devastating long-range shot, and fitness. Sir Robert Charlton was born on October 11, 1937, in Ashington, Northumberland to coal miner Robert “Bob” Charlton and Elizabeth Ellen “Cissie” Charlton. He made his first-team Manchester United debut in 1956 at 18. He rapidly established himself as a team regular, and in 1957 he won the Football League First Division championship. The club’s final survivor, Charlton, was saved by colleague Harry Gregg and survived the Munich plane accident in February 1958.
Charlton was named to England’s World Cup squads four times (1958, 1962, 1966, and 1970), however, he did not play in the first. He was the nation’s most capped player when he retired from the England squad in 1970, having appeared 106 times at the highest level; Bobby Moore surpassed this in 1973. Charlton was Manchester United’s and England’s all-time leading goalscorer and appearance-maker.
