She is also the niece of former NFL fullback Sam Cunningham and Randall Cunningham II’s younger sister. Felicity de Jager, her mother, is a native South African who used to be a professional ballerina with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Vashti received some of her athletic skills from her father, Randall, a former NFL quarterback. She has four siblings: Randall Cunningham II Christian, Grace, and Sophia.

Vashti, like her brother, jumped for Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada until she signed with Nike in March 2016. She stated then that she hoped to complete her schooling while competing as a professional athlete.

Cunningham set the new national high school record on April 18, 2015, at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California. For her efforts, she was named USATF Athlete of the Week. She won the US Junior National Championship on June 27, 2015. A month later, she improved again at the 2015 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, jumping 1.96 m. That score was equal to the World Youth Best.

Vashti won the 2016 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Portland, Oregon, on March 12, 2016. The time set a new World Junior Record. Cunningham’s jump was the world’s best in 2016, barely one week before the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships, which were held in the same Portland convention center location. She won the World Indoor Championship.

Cunningham won the 2017 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships by jumping 1.96 m in March. Cunningham won the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, California on April 15, 2017, and two weeks later she won the Penn Relays. Cunningham finished third in the IAAF Diamond League 2017 Prefontaine Classic on May 27 in Eugene, trailing World Champion Mariya Lasitskene.

Cunningham won the 2017 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Sacramento State University on June 23 by jumping 1.99 meters. Cunningham finished second in the 1.97 m jump at the London Müller Anniversary Games on July 9, 2017. Cunningham finished third at the IAAF Diamond League 2017 Herculis on July 21, 2017, in Fontvieille, Monaco. Cunningham finished 10th at the World Championships on August 12, 2017.
