Sonny Vaccaro, also known as John Paul Vincent “Sonny” Vaccaro, was born on September 23, 1939, in Trafford, Pennsylvania, to Natale Vaccaro and Margaret Vaccaro. Sonny Vaccaro is a former sports marketing executive from the United States.
Vaccaro is best recognized for his time at Nike, Inc., where he helped sign Michael Jordan to his first sneaker contract. Vaccaro moved on from Nike to Adidas and eventually Reebok. From 1984 to 2007, he developed the ABCD Camp, an elite showcase of high school basketball standouts. It included future NBA stars Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, and LeBron James.
In 1965, Vaccaro co-founded the first national high school All-Star game, The Dapper Dan Roundball Classic, in Pittsburgh with concert organizer and childhood friend Pat DiCesare.
Vaccaro and basketball coach George Raveling were close friends, with Raveling serving as best man at Sonny’s second wedding. Raveling and Sonny had a falling out over the summer high school basketball programs that Sonny ran.
Raveling replaced Sonny in the same job at Nike. Vaccaro was a significant figure in the O’Bannon v. NCAA case, which permitted players to be rewarded for video game appearances. Vaccaro assisted in the recruitment of Ed O’Bannon for the case.
