Nicklaus was born on January 21, 1940, in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up in the Upper Arlington neighborhood. He is of German heritage and the son of Helen (Schoener) and Charlie Nicklaus, a pharmacist who owned multiple Nicklaus Drug Store locations.
Charlie was a talented all-around athlete who had played football for the Ohio State Buckeyes before going on to play semi-professional football with the Portsmouth Spartans (who eventually became the Detroit Lions in the NFL). Charlie had previously been a scratch golfer and a local tennis champion. Charlie Nicklaus died at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer.
Nicklaus attended Upper Arlington High School. In his senior year, Nicklaus was an honorable mention All-Ohio basketball pick as a shooting guard, and he had some recruiting interest from major basketball organizations, including Ohio State. He also excelled in football, baseball, tennis, and track & field as a child.
Nicklaus began playing golf at the age of ten, earning a 51 on his first nine holes at Scioto Country Club. Charlie Nicklaus joined Scioto that same year, after returning to golf to recover from a volleyball injury. At Scioto, he was coached by club pro Jack Grout, a Texas-bred contemporary of Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan; Grout had played relatively effectively on the PGA Tour and would go on to become Nicklaus’ lifelong golf tutor.
