Whitey Herzog was born on November 9, 1931, in New Athens, Illinois. He is a former professional baseball outfielder and manager from the United States who is most known for his tenure as a manager in Major League Baseball (MLB).

Whitey played baseball and basketball while he was a student at New Athens High School. He attracted attention from the Saint Louis University and Illinois college basketball programs.

With the Washington Senators, he made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut in 1956. Herzog continued to work in Major League Baseball after his playing days ended in 1963, holding a number of positions including scout, manager, coach, general manager, and director of the farm system.

He assisted the New York Mets in winning the 1969 World Series as a scout and director of the farm system. From 1976 to 1978, he managed the Kansas City Royals in the major leagues and guided them to three straight postseason trips. The St. Louis Cardinals had three World Series appearances after Gussie Busch hired them as manager in 1980. They defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1982 World Series but lost in 1985 and 1987.

On July 25, 2010, he was admitted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and on August 16, 2014, he was admitted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum.
