Who is Lenny Wilkens?
Lenny Wilkens also known as Leonard Randolph Wilkens was born on October 28, 1937. He grew up in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. His father was of African-American descent, and his mother was of Irish descent.
The St. Louis Hawks selected Wilkens sixth overall in the 1960 NBA draft. He began his career with the St. Louis Hawks, who lost in the NBA finals to the Boston Celtics in his debut season.
He was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame three times: first as a player in 1989, then as a coach in 1998, and finally in 2010 as a member of the 1992 United States Olympic “Dream Team,” for which he was an assistant coach.
Wilkens was named to the NBA 50th Anniversary Team in 1996, and the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. In addition, he was named to the list of the 15 Greatest Coaches in NBA History in 2022, making him the only person to be named to both the NBA 75th season celebration list as a player and as a coach. He was also inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Wilkens appeared in 13 NBA All-Star Games as a player (nine times) and as a head coach (four times), was the 1993 NBA Coach of the Year, won the 1979 NBA championship as the head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics, and won an Olympic gold medal as the head coach of the 1996 United States men’s basketball team.
Wilkens set the record for most regular season coaching wins in NBA history during the 1994-95 season, which he maintained until his retirement with 1,332 victories. He retired from playing in 1975 and coached the Trail Blazers for one more season.
