He owns the USAC lifetime wins record of 159 and the American championship racing career wins record of 67.

He is the only driver to have won the Indianapolis 500 four times—in 1961, 1964, 1967, and 1977—as well as the Daytona 500, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 1976 and 1977, Foyt won the International Race of Champions all-star racing series. He won the 1964 Firecracker 400 and the 1972 Daytona 500 on the NASCAR stock car circuit. Foyt was involved in three significant crashes that resulted in catastrophic injuries, and he nearly avoided a fourth. Foyt’s accomplishments have earned him admission into various motorsports halls of fame.

Foyt became a team owner in the mid-1960s, fielding cars for himself and other drivers. He has owned A. J. Foyt Enterprises, which has fielded teams in the CART, IRL, and NASCAR since retiring from active racing.
