Peter Edward Rose Sr., commonly known as “Charlie Hustle,” was born on April 14, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Rose attended Western Hills High School and participated in baseball and football. Rose earned the starting running back position on his freshman football squad despite his diminutive stature. Rose got the starting running back spot on his freshman football squad despite being tiny for his age. Rose was disappointed when he was not promoted to the varsity football squad during his sophomore year and he soon lost interest in his interest in his studies.

Rose was a member of the Cincinnati Reds lineup known as the Big Red Machine during their dominance of the National League in the 1970s. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1963 to 1986. He also played for the Philadelphia Phillies, where he won another World Series, and for the Montreal Expos for a short time. From 1984 to 1989, he managed the Reds both during and after his playing career.

He won three World Series, three batting crowns, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, and the Rookie of the Year Award. Rose won both of his Gold Gloves as an outfielder, in 1969 and 1970.
