He was known as “Mr. Clutch” for his ability to make a big play in a clutch situation, as evidenced by his famous buzzer-beating 60-foot shot that tied Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks.
West played small forward early in his career. He was a standout at East Bank High School and West Virginia University and helped the Mountaineers win the 1959 NCAA title game. He was selected the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Final Four despite the loss.
