James Joseph Larrañaga also known as Jim Larranaga was born on October 2, 1949. Since 2011, he has served as the men’s basketball team’s head coach at the University of Miami Hurricanes, where he coaches collegiate basketball.
He began his coaching career in 1971. Larraaga was the head men’s basketball coach at American International College from 1977 to 1979, Bowling Green State University from 1986 to 1997, and George Mason University from 1997 to 2011, where he led the Patriots to 13 consecutive winning seasons and rose to fame after the team’s unlikely run to the Final Four in the 2005-2006 season, all before joining the University of Miami.
In the 2022–23 season, he led the Miami Hurricanes to their first-ever berth in the Final Four. Larraaga has won 725 games in charge of a team by the end of the 2022–23 season, along with three national coach of the year awards.
Larraaga grew up in New York City’s Bronx neighborhood of Parkchester. Larraaga started playing varsity basketball for coach Jack Curran at Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens, where he graduated in 1967.
He continued playing basketball in college at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island, where he served as the Friars’ senior team captain and guided them to a 20-8 record and a trip to the NIT.
