Jim Otto was drafted by the projected American Football League franchise in Minneapolis. When the Minneapolis team refused to acquire an NFL franchise, Otto’s rights were transferred to the AFL’s Oakland Raiders.
He then signed with the Raiders and played for the team for the next ten years and five years after that. He was given jersey number 50 for the AFL’s inaugural season in 1960 but swapped to 00 the following year. Otto put forth a lot of effort to get to his playing weight of 255 pounds (116 kg).
Otto was one of only twenty players to appear in all 10 years of the American Football League, and one of only three to appear in all of his team’s AFL games.
