Gregg Popovich is an American professional basketball coach and executive who is the president and head coach of the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association. He was born on January 28, 1949, in East Chicago, Indiana, United States to Raymond Popovich, and Katherine Popovich. In 1966, he graduated from Merrillville High School.
Popovich has been with the Spurs organization since 1994, serving as president of basketball operations and general manager until becoming coach in 1996. Popovich has the longest active coaching tenure in the NBA and all other major sports leagues in the United States. Popovich was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
Popovich led the Spurs to a winning record in all 22 of his full seasons as coach, breaking Phil Jackson’s record for the most consecutive winning seasons in NBA history.
During his tenure, the Spurs won against every other NBA team, and he played a key role in the Spurs’ long-term success in the 1990s, 2000s and much of the 2010s. He was also the head coach of the United States national team in the 2020 Summer Olympics, where he led the squad to a gold medal.
