Marc Player trying to auction memorabilia without his father’s consent

For the second time in three years, Gary Player’s memorabilia has been sold at auction without his consent. The nine-time major winner isn’t too pleased about it either.

Golf Hall of Famer Gary Player of South Africa posted a statement on Twitter and Instagram accusing his son Marc, who managed his financial affairs for more than 20 years, of having sold several items, including several of his trophies, without his permission.

In a statement, my son and former manager, Marc, said, “I would like to raise the public’s attention to the fact that various trophies and other items of memorabilia that form part of my history have been put up for sale. “I have taken steps to recover these artifacts since they are mine. I haven’t listed anything for sale, either through an auction or otherwise.

When reached via a direct message on Twitter, Marc Player replied that he was out of the country and wouldn’t be available for comment until he got back.

In response to a question from Golf Digest, brand and legal counsel James Throssell for Gary Player and his grandson said, “The auction house has taken the trophies down from the online auction and is holding them until settlement of the matter.” Throssell continued, “I’m not free to identify the auction house, and Gary Player is pursuing the terms of a secret settlement agreement we reached with Marc Player last year.”

“Goods that Mr. Player either won tournaments on, was given to him by sponsors [tournament bags, etc.] as well as trophies earned by Mr. Player over his career” are among the items, according to Throssell.

When Marc Player served as his father’s manager, according to Throssell, the objects were given to him with the understanding that they would be handled with Mr. Player’s best interests in mind.

Golden Age Golf Auctions held an auction in December 2020 for eight of Player’s trophies, including copies of four of his major championship trophies. The total amount raised by the four main awards was $578,843. The trophies “were previously sold to a private collector to raise money for charity purposes,” according to Golden Age Auctions at the time.

Wayne Player, the eldest son of Gary Player, was the subject of controversy at the 2021 Masters, which led to his expulsion from the grounds of Augusta National Golf Club and a subsequent ban from the competition. As Lee Elder, who broke the tournament’s color barrier in 1975, was being introduced on the first tee during the honorary starter ceremony, Wayne Player, working as his father’s caddie, prominently exhibited a sleeve of OnCore golf balls. His activities were seen as a sales tactic. He later expressed regret to Elder, who passed away in November 2021 at the age of 87.

Net worth

Marc Player’s estimated net worth is unknown. His father, Gary Play has an estimated net worth of $250 million.
