Sheene debuted in competitive motorcycle racing in 1968, winning his first races on his father Frank’s 125cc and 250cc Bultacos at Brands Hatch.

At the age of 20, Sheene had won the British 125cc championship on a former Suzuki factory racing team motorcycle he had purchased for £2,000. Stuart Graham, a Suzuki Factory-backed rider, had previously ridden the 1967 Suzuki RT67 twin-cylinder motorbike in the 1968 Grands Prix and selected 1969 events.

He was the first Japanese 500cc champion and the first guy to win more than one championship on a Suzuki. He was the first and only non-Yamaha rider to win the Formula 750 championship.

Sheene’s 1977 triumph was Britain’s only solo motorcycle world championship until Danny Kent won the Motor category in 2015. Sheene, on the other hand, is the last British champion in the premier class.

After his racing career that lasted from 1968 to 1984, he retired and moved to Australia to work as a motorsport commentator and property developer.
