Lee Buck Trevino was born into a Mexican-American family on December 1st, 1939 in Garland, Texas. He was raised by his mother Juanita Trevino and his grave digger grandfather Joe Trevino. He was a former American professional golfer and is recognized as one of the game’s greatest players ever.
Trevino received his first golf instruction from his uncle when his uncle gave him a few golf balls and an old club. Trevino joined the US Marine Corps in December 1956 when he became 17 years old. He served as a machine gunner for four years before being released as a corporal with the 3rd Marine Division in December 1960.
He played golf for a while with Marine Corps officers. Orville Moody, who would follow Trevino to the PGA Tour in the late 1960s, was one of his competitors when he participated successfully in Armed Forces golf competitions in Asia.
He is one of just four golfers to have won the PGA Championship, Open Championship, and U.S. Open twice each. He had yet to win only one major, the Master’s Tournament. Mexican Americans hold him in high regard as a national hero, and other golfers refer to him as “Supermex” and “The Merry Mex.”
