Bill Bowerman, also known as William Jay Bowerman, is a well-known American track and field coach as well as the co-founder and primary designer of the athletic shoe firm Nike, Inc. He coached 31 Olympic competitors, 51 All-Americans, 12 American records, 22 NCAA champions, and 16 sub-4 minute milers during his career. He was born on February 19, 1911, and passed away on December 24, 1999.

Bill Bowerman was born in Portland, Oregon, to Jay Bowerman, a former governor, and Elizabeth Hoover Bowerman. He attended elementary and secondary schools in both Medford and Seattle before returning to Medford for high school. He was a member of the high school band and the state-champion football team during his junior and senior years.

In 1929, Bowerman attended the University of Oregon to play football and study journalism. He also joined the track squad at the urging of longtime track coach Bill Hayward. He was a member of the fraternity Beta Theta Pi. In 1934, he began teaching biology and coaching football at Franklin High School in Portland.

Bowerman disliked being referred to as a coach, although throughout his 24 years at the University of Oregon, the Ducks track and field team had a winning season every year, won four NCAA championships, and finished in the top ten in the country sixteen times. As a co-founder of Nike, he designed some of their most popular products, like the Cortez and Waffle Racer, and helped the firm transition from being a distributor of other shoe companies to designing their shoes. His product is the most recognizable footwear design. He was the company’s head designer, and he dedicated his life to inventing shoes that helped players perform better on the field.

Bowerman took a break from day-to-day coaching duties in 1972 to raise funds for the renovation of the Hayward Field grandstands, which would be required if the United States was to host the Olympic Trials again in 1976.

Bill Bowerman married Barbara Bowerman on June 22, 1936, a year after she graduated and they had three children together. Their first son, Jon, was born on June 22, 1938, he is 85 years old as of 2023. William J. Bowerman, Jr. (“Jay”) was born November 17, 1942, he is 81 years old as of 2023. and Their third son, Tom, was born on May 20, 1946, he is 77 years old as of 2023.
